The Mask That Costs You

What Behavioural Profiling Reveals About Your Health

Health and Happiness in The Algarve

We talk a great deal about stress. We know it contributes to poor sleep, low energy, and anxiety. What we talk about far less is where much of that stress actually comes from.

Not from our workloads. Not from our circumstances alone. But from the gap between who we genuinely are - and who we have learned to perform as.

I worked recently with a client - a capable, experienced professional, a man well regarded in his field - whose DISCPlus behavioural profile told a quietly striking story. Privately, he was warm, sociable, and people-focused. A natural connector. But in his professional world, that self had been replaced by someone task-driven,
precise, and controlled. The warmth tucked away. The spontaneity managed out. A version of himself that was thorough, reliable - and exhausting to maintain.

His Conscientious score:
precision, correctness, rule-adherence, had risen by 31 points between his private self and his public persona. A learned adaptation. A mask that had earned him respect and quietly cost him enormously.

When I reflected this back to him, there was a long pause.

“I know exactly what you
mean,” he said. “And I know how and when this is happening.”

That is the lightbulb moment.
Not the data alone, but when a person’s story meets their profile. When they see not just what the numbers show, but why it makes complete sense given their life.

Because the body keeps score.
Fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix. A mind that won’t switch off. These are not random. They are feedback.

This work is for anyone — men, women, teams — who suspects that how they are operating is costing them more than it should.
