A Guide to the Best Things to Do in Lagos, Portugal

Lagos is often celebrated as the poster child for the Algarve—famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters. However, to treat it solely as a summer beach resort is to miss its true soul.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-term resident, Lagos offers a year-round haven of maritime history, vibrant culture, and exceptional gastronomy.

Discover the Algarve’s Golden Coast

The coastline here is non-negotiable for any itinerary. Ponta da Piedade remains the region’s highlight; its sandstone stacks and hidden grottos are best explored by kayak at sunrise to avoid the midday boat traffic.

While tourists flock to the postcard-perfect Praia do Camilo (be prepared for the stairs!), locals know that the sprawling sands of Meia Praia offer a windswept escape. It is the perfect spot for long winter walks or kite-surfing without the crowds.

For a unique perspective, look up—Skydive Algarve offers jumps with views stretching to Sagres and the "End of the World".

A Walk Through History in the Old Town

Lagos was the launchpad for Portugal’s Age of Discovery. As you walk the Old Town’s patterned calçada pavements, you are treading the same ground as Prince Henry the Navigator.

  • Slave Market Museum (Mercado de Escravos): A sobering and essential stop to understand the city's complex past.
  • Igreja de Santo António: Often called the "Golden Church," this baroque masterpiece is a stunning contrast to the simple white exterior.
  • Forte da Ponta da Bandeira: Standing guard over the harbour, this fortress offers excellent views and a glimpse into 17th-century maritime defence.

    Local Flavours and Hidden Gems

For the best dining experiences, step away from the main square. Head to Casinha do Petisco for an authentic Cataplana (seafood stew) or drive slightly out of town to O Camilo for fresh fish with a panoramic ocean view.

Residents often retreat to the Lagos Cultural Centre, which hosts surprisingly high-calibre art exhibitions and concerts throughout the year.

Insider Tip: If you are in town on August 29th, join the locals for the Banho 29 tradition. It is a historic folk custom where a midnight dip in the sea is said to be worth 29 baths, washing away the year's troubles.
